Christ is not a message the preacher carries to the pulpit. He is the gospel itself, and every version of the gospel that still has the preacher in it has already missed the point.
This teaching draws a sharp line between hearing the word and embracing it. The argument is that box-checked Christianity produces people who can quote sermons but have not become what they heard, because the gospel is not content to be received but a person to be known. From there, the teaching establishes that Christ is the power of the believer unto salvation, not the Bible, and that reading scripture without seeing Christ in it leaves a person with law and no means to fulfill it. Grace is then defined precisely as the love of God bringing sons into fellowship with the Holy Spirit, and it is in that fellowship that truth is unveiled, lies lose their grip, and the enemy's actual weapon, which is ignorance, is disarmed. The session introduces twelve words that define sons of God, beginning with Grace, and makes the case that these words are not vocabulary but the framework by which sons recognize legalism, spiritual abuse, and cultural performance masquerading as the gospel.
SCRIPTURE: 1 Corinthians 1:17-24, 2 Corinthians 13:14, Acts 17:28, James 1:22
SERIES: Being in Christ. This series works through twelve defining words of sonship, building a foundation that separates the life lived in Christ from religion done in his name.
