Christ Provides for our Doubts

Listen Later

The risen Christ, in his sovereign grace, graciously accommodates himself to the spiritual and emotional weaknesses of his disciples—both their need for forgiveness and their lingering doubts—by appearing bodily among them, offering tangible proof of his resurrection through his wounds, invitation to touch him, and the act of eating fish, thereby affirming his physical reality and dispelling the heresy of docetism. He meets them not only in their fear and guilt but also in their unbelief, gently correcting their misinterpretation of experience by grounding their faith in his prior teachings, demonstrating that true faith is not rooted in emotion or sensation but in the authority of Scripture. This same Christ, who condescended to his disciples in their time of need, continues to meet believers today through the Holy Spirit, the preached Word, the sacraments, and answered prayer, affirming his presence and sustaining faith even in moments of doubt. The passage underscores the profound truth that God, in Christ, does not demand perfection but meets us in our frailty, offering forgiveness, confirmation, and continual grace to those who trust in him. Ultimately, the resurrection is not merely a historical event but a living reality that transforms lives through the compassionate, condescending love of a Savior who knows our frame and bears with us in our weakness.
