In this first conversation, CSA Queensland Executive Officer David Yates speaks with Michelle Gouge, Principal of Riverside Christian College, about inheriting a school of around 800 students that was still operating with many of the structures, systems and ways of working of a much smaller school. Michelle reflects on the journey of transitioning Riverside towards a more mature organisational model, including clearer leadership and accountability, stronger systems, greater delegation and more strategic decision-making, while seeking to preserve relationships, culture and Christian mission. Rather than offering a formula to copy, Wisdom Conversations explores the stories, decisions, tensions and lessons that can help principals and senior leaders reflect more deeply on their own leadership and school context.

They discuss the often raised questions about the right for parents to choose faith based schooling for their families, about fees, about fairness in funding as well as accessibility to education and much more.

Catriona, a child of refugee parents, shares her journey into Christian Education, and reflects on approaches she has found to be effective in the classroom. She unpacks her participation in research that looks at moving students from where language is a problem, to where language is a resource.

Andrew Taylor is joined by Annie Oyston, who is a Secondary English and Sports Teacher at Cedars Christian College in Wollongong.

Annie shares her journey of being the daughter of an educator, and the pathway she undertook to become a teacher in her own right. She shares of her belief in the power of connection, and in particular, her experience in using sport to build rapport with her students to create a sense of community across the entire school.
