Peter was criticized for his association with Gentiles, but the Church at Jerusalem eventually came to accept God's salvation of the Gentiles. As such, Barnabas was sent out to a predominately Gentile church at Antioch where he encouraged many (including Saul) and the disciples were first called "Christians".
