It’s natural to think that the way to prevent disappointment is to set lower expectations. The opposite is true with Christmas. If “the most wonderful time of the year” hasn’t always been so wonderful, the solution is not to expect less. Instead, this is the time of year when God teaches us to look for more. On Christmas Day we see how God teaches us to look for bigger glory. Because human beings cannot see the full and unfiltered face of God and live, God must hide his glory in order to reveal it to us. This is exactly what God did in the sending of his Son, the Word made flesh. The Son of God incarnate allows us to stare at God’s glory and see what he is like. When we do, we see that he is full of grace and truth.
