When Jesus surveyed the first-century churches of Asia-Minor, he saw groups of Christians struggling to live out their faith in an increasingly hostile world. Though some Christians clung to the gospel and their faith in him, many others had compromised their faith and were at risk of falling away completely. However, Jesus's letters called them back to their first love, and, for the church in Sardis, to repentance and a renewed commitment to him.
