Chronic Comparison Disorder

Listen Later

Recently, a doctor gave a talk about an epidemic called “Chronic Comparison Disorder." He said that since so many people are on social media, we’re always looking at other peoples’ lives. We look at what they have, what they’ve accomplished, and how they present themselves. Then, we compare that to our own life. We think: why can’t I be that way?
The problem is, social media only shows a tiny glimpse into other peoples’ lives – the external only. And often, even this tiny glimpse is edited and refined. But when we’re bombarded with statuses, pictures, and posts it can be difficult to not compare ourselves to other people. And as Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy”.
So…what’s the solution to comparison disorder? How do we live in our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram-filled world without getting pulled into comparison? The answer is by rooting ourselves in what Jesus says about us. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” When we remember that God made us unique and with a purpose, it is easier to trust His plan for our life instead of comparing it to others. God’s work in your life is superior to any other.
