Publisher's Summary:
Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Chronicles: On Our Troubled Times by Thomas Piketty, narrated by Charlie Anson.
The return of the best-selling, award-winning economist extraordinaire. With the same powerful evidence and range of reference as his global best seller Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Chronicles sets out Thomas Piketty's analysis of the financial crisis, what has happened since and where we should go from here.
Tackling a wider range of subjects than in Capital, from productivity in Britain to Barack Obama, it comprises the very best of his writing for Liberation from the past 10 years.
Now, translated into English for the first time, it will further cement Piketty's reputation as the world's leading thinker today.
Members Reviews:
Excellent Context on Events That Matter
This is a great summary of recent economic events in Europe and elsewhere. The articles are short, usually emphasizing a point with the use of keen language and a few examples. The same level of competence that carried Capital is present in this text as well. Political economists and layman alike will find this enlightening. This was published just before the United Kingdom jettisoned itself from the European Union, but this is an excellent was to receive context of the EU and it's recent socioeconomic, economic, and political landscape. This book is definitely timely.
A Fine Collection of Essays Full of Insights
Chronicles consists of newspaper op eds written by Thomas Piketty for the newspapers La Liberation and one op ed published in Le Monde. Piketty, of course, is the author of Capitalism in the Twenty-First Century, a seven-hundred page tome which analyzes the current state of capitalism. One could either slog through this dense but significant work, or could go through these easily digestible op eds and probably obtain the same insights, albeit in a more reader-friendly manner.
While the commentaries may have more meaning for European affairs, the issues discussed are confronted by everyone on this globe. Issues such as sovereign debt, income disparity, the tendency of multi-nationals to oppress working classes, the ineffectualness of politicians and/or political organizations in dealing with structural defects in government administration. Many of these essays date from as far back as 2009 and 2010. Many were written around the time that the Occupy Movement first gained momentum. It is interesting that Piketty was writing about these issues far earlier than when they became a part of the American mainstream political discourse. They are really universal issues, at least at this point in time.
These essays are readily accessible. Because they were written for a general newspaper readership, Piketty tones down the level of academic rigor, use of technical economic terminology, and avoids charts and graphs entirely, which can leave the general reader mentally exhausted after reading Capitalism in the Twenty-First Century. In this respect, Chronicles is worth a read.
The Federalist Papers
Rock star economist Thomas Piketty has earned the right to a regular column in the left-wing standard-bearer, Liberation, of which this is an anthology.
The main thrust of the articles is that if the European Union is to ever have the necessary legitimacy to solve its economic problems, it urgently needs to make the change from bureaucratic federation to democratic federation.
