On John Keane's arrival at Urmston University, his faculty head Montague Burton takes him to meet Simon Chalmers, the University Librarian. He warns him that the Librarian mocks senior academics by pretending to be an Orang-Utan. As he is speaking, the librarian but Keane wins him over by pretending to treat him in his role by offering him a banana.
Chalmers befriends Keane and starts helping him in his research.
But problems arise with university politics, and an attempt to end Keane's contract.
As the day of his interview approaches, Chalmers finds evidence that will buy time for him, offering hope of having his contract renewed ...
