A straightforward reading of this week’s gospel reading (Matthew 23:1-12) would lead us to believe that Jesus is only calling out religious leaders for their hypocrisy. We might even find ourselves settling comfortably with a sense that “we’re not like that,” and we would be mistaken, for the story is one that we must all enter and ask some difficult questions of ourselves-namely, where does our hypocrisy lie? In this sermon titled “Church of the Poisoned Mind,” we’ll examine this challenging passage and explore how we might find peace in the space between the pastoral and prophetic tensions of our faith.
