What motivates your worship?

In Matthew 6, Jesus warns us not to practice our faith simply to be seen or approved by others. Our worship is meant for an audience of one: God. In this message, we look at the difference between seeking the reward of human approval and experiencing the blessing that comes from living for God’s approval.

We’re also reminded that our relationship with God isn’t based on a religious scoreboard. We aren’t saved by our good works or accomplishments, but by grace through faith in Jesus and what He accomplished for us on the cross.

Worship is not ultimately about what we do or how we do it. It's about who we're worshiping and why.

In Matthew 6:1–18, Jesus warns His followers to be careful not to practice their righteousness for the purpose of being seen by others. Whether we're giving, serving, praying, singing, or reading Scripture, even good and faithful practices can become something different when our desire shifts toward the approval and applause of others.

What does Jesus really care about when it comes to worship?

In Matthew 6:1–18, Jesus warns His followers to be careful about practicing their righteousness for the approval and applause of others. Whether we’re giving, praying, fasting, serving, singing, or living out our faith, the question isn’t simply what we’re doing or how we’re doing it. The deeper question is: Who are we worshiping, and why are we doing it?

Our acts of worship are meant to be done for an audience of One.

As we begin a new study through Matthew 6, we’ll consider how easily our worship can become about being seen, approved, or applauded by others and how Jesus calls us back to sincere, humble devotion to God.

The cross is brutal. It’s difficult to look at, difficult to understand, and difficult to sit with. And yet, Jesus gave us communion to bring us back to it, to remember the seriousness of sin and the incredible cost of our salvation.

In this message, we look at the crucifixion of Jesus through the lens of the Passover lamb and the significance of the fact that none of His bones were broken. What happened at the cross was not an accident or simply the result of human decisions. Jesus willingly gave His life on our behalf, bearing our sins so that we could be forgiven and reconciled to God.

As we come to the communion table, we are reminded of two realities: "our sin is serious, but our salvation is significant." Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him—and that joy was the salvation of people like us.
