Danielle Densley Tingley is a Professor of Architectural Engineering at the University of Sheffield, her research focuses on how to reduce the embodied carbon of our buildings. Today, cement alone accounts for 8% of the world emissions - which is actually more than cars! If we are to move to a low carbon economy, we inevitably won't be able to stop just at operational energy, we will need to also find the methods to reduce embodied energy down to zero also. In this episode we discuss:

• The circular economy of construction materials
• The feasibility of designing for deconstruction, reuse of existing buildings and down cycling of construction materials
• How to improve the efficiency of material use in structural design
