Reverend Jesse Jackson, civil rights campaigner and Baptist preacher, has died aged 84. A protégé of Martin Luther King Jr., Jackson dedicated his life to advocating for minorities on issues including voting rights, job opportunities, education and healthcare. He made history with two presidential bids for the Democrats in 1984 and 1988, becoming the first African-American contender for a major national party, and his campaigns laid the foundation for Barack Obama's election as America's first black president.
