Clara Barton was the first woman to represent the United States at an international event, the Geneva Convention in Switzerland in 1878. Growing up in Massachusetts, she taught school until she moved to Washington DC to work in the U.S. Patent Office. There she met people of infuence and later became involved with battlefield first aid and field hospitals to support the wounded soldiers during the Civil War. Her own health was failing her, and in 1870, she traveled to Europe to get fresh air and healing in the Alps of Switzerland. There she met the head of the International Red Cross who inspired Clara to start up the American Red Cross. Clara grew the American Red Cross to serve in various American and international disaster recoveries, from floods, to famines, to war-torn recoveries in the US and the Caribbean. She also spoke out in favor of women and African Americans to advance their rights. Clara's courage to help women and minorities gain and exercise their rights, and her devotion to advance social integrity to benefit all Americans makes her a HOSS indeed! The Eagle Hoss & Hound podcast is a platform for respect. Respect for the Eagle - the individual with a service background (including spouses). Respect for the Hoss - the Social Integrity Hero from our American past. Plus, the Hound - the common #AmericanMutt - you and me. Follow @EagleIMBUED - J.D. Collier
