On today's episode of Real Creative Humans, I sit down with Clarence Heyward.
Clarence Heyward is a painter whose work delves into cultural truths,
challenges stereotypes, and explores identity, especially within the
context of the Black American experience. He creates dynamic
figurative art, utilizing subjects who are people of color as an homage to
his culture. His art practice involves challenging stereotypes and myths,
offering social commentary, critiquing perceptions, and fostering
dialogues, primarily viewed through the lens of the Black American
male experience. His work draws from his life experiences as a Black
man, husband, and father in America, incorporating personal and
collective narratives that highlight Black bodies and reinterpreting Black
existence in imagery.
Heyward's work has been showcased nationally in various spaces,
including:
• 21c Museum of Durham
• The Harvey B. Gantt Center for Cultural Arts
• The Wiregrass Museum of Art
• The Museum of Science and Industry Chicago
• The Art Miami Art Fair
• The Dallas Art Fair
• Expo Chicago
• The Container-Santa Fe
• The Cameron Art Museum
• The North Carolina Museum of Art
• The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Heyward relocated to North Carolina to study Art
Education at North Carolina Central University. He currently lives and
works in Raleigh, NC. He began his journey as a full-time artist in 2019.
