Publisher's Summary:
Captain Jack Aubrey sails away from the brutal Australian prison colonies, returned to his favourite ship the Surprise, but pondering on middle age and sexual frustration. Furthermore, he soon becomes aware that he is out of touch with the mood of his ship: to his astonishment he finds that in spite of a lifetime's experience he does not know what the foremast hands or even his own officers are thinking. They know, as he does not, that the Surprise has a stranger aboard, but what they do not know is that the stranger is potentially as dangerous as lighting the powder magazine itself.

Critic Reviews:
"[O'Brian] writes with humour, irony, and an eye for those telling details that give you a man in a moment." (Sunday Times)

Another side to Patrick Obrian
This book demonstrates Patrick Obrian's ability not just to portray blood and thunder in the Nelson's day british navy but to build a character totally unrelated to the sea and ships and put the reader in the minds of common sailors when relating to this character.
The range of emotions and reactions so carefully and accurately portrayed within the confines of a ship of war and it's people are pure mastery!
Forgotten little gem
Its been some few years since I last read the final books in this series and I had forgotten just what a master piece POB has crafted here out of a relatively simple voyage from one place to the next.
POB is a master at observing the human condition, but more particularly the male human condition and he uses this skill to the foremost as we trace the impact of a new arrival on almost everyone aboard.
One of the better tales in the series.
Better than Hornblower
Unlike Forrester O'Brian has really done his homework. His books are really informative.
Forrerster follows the straight Tory ticket and O'Brian, does not.
Of course the Hornblower series started in the thirties when England still had an empire. The Aubrey/Mathurin series on the other hand started in 1969 when England had lost its empire and democracy had become respectable.
Very good price. Quick delivery
Another masterpiece. Very good price. Quick delivery. What more could I want?
