This passage represents the Jewish religious leadership engaging in verbal warfare with Jesus. They send wave after wave against him, and each time Jesus prevails. While the queries of the various religious leaders are insincere, they nonetheless provide an opportunity for Jesus to teach his followers how we relate to the State, to the afterlife, to God, and to each other.
