Ep. 08: Purpose, Profit & Play: Marketing That's Actually Fun w/ Bree
This week I'm sitting down with Bree (@breefrommarketing) — head marketing fairy at The Marketing Fairies, founder of Brisbane Party Fairies, soon-to-be owner of Brisbane's first trampoline gym-slash-nightclub, and one of my longest standing clients. The Queen of Whimsy herself.
And this conversation is everything I want women in business to hear.
Bree started her business at 19 after watching marketing agencies burn through non-profit budgets and deliver nothing. She taught herself the whole game, built something impressive fast… and hid behind a corporate brand the entire time. Blues. Greens. "Professional." Because who takes a young, giggly, blonde girl seriously, right?
Wrong.
We talk about the moment she stopped separating herself into parts, brought her actual personality to the front of her brand, and what happened when she did. Spoiler: people didn't run. They got obsessed.
We go deep on the fears underneath it. Being perceived as the dumb one. The "too much" stories. The daddy's money assumptions. Even close friends talking sh*t. And how she got to the place where none of it can rock her — because it's genuinely none of her business what you think of her.
Then we break down her Purpose, Profit, Play framework. It's one of the cleanest ways I've heard marketing explained. Play is your attraction. Purpose is your nurture. Profit is the natural byproduct when people already like you, trust you, and believe in your mission. Marketing is just making friends.
We also don't skip the real stuff. Bree shares the era where everything looked incredible from the outside while she was in hospital four times a year, running on a fried nervous system with zero boundaries, telling no one she was sick. And the complete rebuild since — the identity work, learning to say no, restructuring her entire business, and creating a life where she spent 18 weeks overseas last year while running three businesses.
And the purpose piece? This woman donated $100k to charity last year and is aiming for $150k this year. Every fourth party her fairies book, they do one free for a family who can't afford it. She built giving into her business model when she was charging $25 an hour. This is what it looks like when marketing, money and mission actually work together.
If you've been hiding parts of yourself because you think you have to choose between being taken seriously and being fully you — this episode is your permission slip.
