This may sound strange, but sometimes, when two people are speaking, there are actually three people present.
The speaker.
The listener.
And the person that the two of them are talking about.
Last November, in the first Clean Speech Colorado campaign, we focused on avoiding lashon hara, loosely translated as gossip and slander about the person not in the room.
This year’s Clean Speech campaign we’ll focus on another speech topic, called onas devarim. That’s speech that causes embarrassment, pain or insult to the person you’re speaking to directly.
