Clear & Convincing - Episode 38 - Texas v. Charles Victor Thompson

Listen Later

After a short relationship plagued by domestic violence, Dennise Hayslip ended her affair with Charles Victor Thompson.  Thompson refused to accept Dennise’s decision and, in the early morning hours of April 30, 1998, Darren Cain went to Dennise’s apartment to help her deal with Thompson, who was still abusing her.  Thompson and Cain fought and, when a Houston Police officer arrived at 3:00 a.m., he found Thompson with a black eye.  Since no one wanted to press charges, the officer escorted Thompson from the property and warned him not to return.  At around 6:00 a.m., Thompson returned with a gun.   After the shooting, Thompson fled to a friend’s house, where he admitted to returning to Dennise’s with a gun, kicking in the door and shooting Darren and Denise.  After turning himself in, Thompson attempted to get his friend to change her statement, which she refused to do.  While being held in the Harris County jail awaiting trial, Thompson attempted to arrange his friend’s murder by former cellmates who were being released.  In August of 1998, he was charged with solicitation of capital murder.    At trial, Thompson claimed that Dennise’s death was caused my medical malpractice.  Join Lisa O’Brien and Michael Carnahan on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, at 8:00 p.m. Central for a discussion of the evidence against Charles Victor Thompson, his direct appeal, re-sentencing trial, escape from custody in Harris County, additional appeal and post-conviction claims, in which he challenges his capital murder based on the claim that Dennise died as a result of medical malpractice.
