Clement XIII: The Pope fights for the Jesuits as European monarchs put on the pressure.

Born Carlo della Torre di Rezzonico on March 7, 1693 to a recently ennobled family of Venice, the second of two children to Giovanni Battista della Torre Rezzonico and Vittoria Barbarigo.



Carlo received his education in Bologna with the Jesuits and studied at the University of Padua. He received a doctorate in both canon and civil law.



After Pope Benedict XIV died in 1758, a College of Cardinals gathered and started a conclave to elect the next pope. They saw Rezzonico as a good candidate because of his support of the Jesuits. He received 31 out of 44 votes and he chose the name Clement XIII to honor Pope Clement XII. He became pope on July 16, 1758. 



During his pontificate disputes regarding the Jesuits came from Enlightenment circles in France. Pope Clement XIII elevated the Feast of the Sacred Heart to the Universal Liturgical Calendar to support the Jesuits and to oppose the Jansenist heresy. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque received visions and promoted devotion to the Sacred Heart. 



Clement XIII died on the night of February 2, 1769 and Clement XIV succeeded him.

Further, in the book, the Risen Christ is aware of the events in his Church. So, we can take courage and peace knowing that Christ knows and is in control of what is happening now. Lastly, yes, the Book of Revelation contains information about the End Times. Fr. Rob proposes that we focus less so on what is happening around us that may signal the End Times. Rather, he suggests we reflect on the mystery that the world will end and all will be fulfilled in Christ with his glory.

Some of the important Jewish feast days also include: the Feast of Booths, the Day of Atonement, and Hanukkah, which commemorates the rededication of the Temple after the Jews drove out Hellenistic rule and as described in the book of Maccabees. Fr. Rob then discusses how Pentecost is, yes, the birthday of the Church, but it is still fundamentally a harvest festival. In the Old Testament, Pentecost celebrated the grain harvest that grew from February or March. In the New Covenant, the celebration is a harvest of the people. The Acts of the Apostles describes many different people understand the Apostles speaking Galilean in their native tongue. This symbolizes the Church beginning to harvest souls from all corners of the Earth. Finally, Fr. Rob invites all of us to participate in that harvest and praying to the Holy Spirit to help one's own evangelization efforts and build a fruitful harvest for the Lord.

Easter is Not Just Another Day with Fr. Rob

Easter: So, it is the Triduum…we have done well(ish) with Lent, but how to we celebrate Easter? Tune in and hear Fr. Rampino explain how the Gospel of St. John explains Easter. How we should live it out! Christ desires to bring us to the Father and save us. St. John witnessed the Passion of Christ closely and John shows Christ that he is in control, but is a willing sacrifice. Jesus acts our of divine peace and he desires to bring us into that divine peace. To celebrate properly, we have a different kind of hope. That hope allows us to be more merciful and forgiving. Maybe even add some ice cream to make the Easter season all the more celebratory! Happy Easter!

Fr. Conrad reflects on his inspiration for the podcast while home for Thanksgiving. He read through biographies of the United States Presidents in order. Then he thought he could maybe do a project like that for the Popes. After six years, the Habemus Papam podcast ends. Through this research, Fr. Conrad explains in the finale now more greatly appreciates the work of the Holy Spirit to keep the Church afloat. We fallen, broken, and sinful humans are entrusted by God with the great gift that is the Church. Good men were popes and bad men were popes. But we have the confidence in Christ that the Church is our means to salvation.
