Climate Change and the Beginning of the Age of Non-Tourism

Listen Later

GreenShift is a podcast from Skift that focuses on climate change and travel. Each week, Climate Reporter Darin Graham will report on innovations and challenges across the travel industry and speak to industry leaders and thinkers.

Today, Graham is joined by Stefan Gössling, a tourism and climate change researcher for over 25 years, and current professor of Tourism Research at Linnaeus University. He discusses the escalating impact of climate change on global tourism, and explains how phenomena like wildfires, storms, and floods are now regularly disrupting travel, signaling that climate-related costs—not just temperature changes—will increasingly shape the future of the industry. Gössling emphasizes that most tourism growth is unsustainable, particularly in air travel, where profit margins are thin and decarbonization remains elusive. Ultimately, Gössling fears travel could become a luxury for the wealthy, while most people face the harsh consequences of a warming world.
