Climate - Daily Summary (2026-05-17)

Listen Later

Good evening, I'm Ravi Patel. We begin tonight with growing concerns over a potential Super El Niño forming in the coming months. The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center has raised the likelihood of an El Niño developing by July to 82%, with projections suggesting it could persist through winter 2027. This is unusual, as El Niños typically take longer to emerge, and its potential strength has meteorologists closely monitoring its impact. AccuWeather warns this could become a rare 'Super El Niño,' possibly the strongest ever recorded, with sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific exceeding long-term averages by 1.5°C. Such an event could bring devastating weather patterns across the U.S., including severe storms, flooding, and disruptions to agriculture.
Meanwhile, India’s Meteorological Department is revising its heatwave criteria to better reflect the realities of climate change. The current guidelines, which require specific temperature thresholds before issuing alerts, have failed to capture severe heat stress in regions like Kerala. With extreme heat becoming more frequent and intense, the IMD’s updates aim to provide more accurate and timely warnings to vulnerable populations.
In Louisiana, a federally funded climate migration project intended as a model for future relocations has instead become a cautionary tale. The $48 million resettlement of Isle de Jean Charles, designed to move families away from eroding land, has left many residents regretting their decision. Former residents like Amy Handon, now living in New Isle, describe ongoing challenges, including isolation and broken promises, raising questions about how best to handle climate-driven displacement.
Finally, New Zealand is sounding the alarm on the increasing severity of droughts as global temperatures rise. The Climate Change Commission warns that future droughts could be far worse than previously thought, with recent events—like the 2012-13 drought that slashed national GDP—serving as stark reminders of their economic and social toll. As climate patterns shift, experts emphasize the need for better preparation and adaptation strategies.
This is Ravi Patel, signing off.
