Closing an email privacy loophole

Current laws about email privacy are two decades old. Bipartisan legislation, passed unanimously by the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year, would modernize these rules so that a government agency must get a warrant to search Americans’ online communications or data in cloud storage. The bill, now awaiting action in the Senate, would close an outdated loophole allowing authorities to obtain data older than 180 days without a judicial warrant.
