Karl von Eckhartshausen was an 18th-century German mystic. The Cloud upon the Sanctuary is Christian mysticism veiled in hermetic code and often considered a classic among Rosicrucians and Theosophists. Eckhartshausen was briefly a member of Adam Weishaupt's Bavarian Illuminati but left for spiritual reasons. In this work, he cryptically mentions a "society of the Elect" that has existed from the very beginning of time as "the invisible celestial Church". He predicted that "it is the society whose members form a theocratic republic, which one day will be the Regent Mother of the whole World." This book would later become a strong influence on the 19th-century members of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Arthur Edward Waite offers an informative, historical introduction.

Intrigueing book by Eckartshausen

Don't even bother with this book unless you are an intense student of this genre. The book has to be understood in the context of other contemporary writers of the Eckhartshausen's era. But for the serious student there is quite a few excellent insights. My suggestion to anyone would be to start off with some works by other authors that are simpler to read and then work up to this one. He isn't as tough to read as Boehme and Saint-Martin, but Goethe is perhaps a good prep for this book.

I was hugely inspired by this book. Apparently Cloud upon the Sanctuary is credited as the influence which lead Aleister Crowley into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Amazing book!

A Book of Christian Esoterism

This is an esoteric work written by the German Catholic Mystic, Karl Eckhartshausen. Eckhartshausen states that within us is a dormant faculty which is readied to be awakened; however, Eckhartshausen does not go into very much detail into this process. Perhaps Eckhartshausen was fearful of some possible repurcussions of the Catholic Church and purposely veiled his writings in terms of his general description of this "Inner Church". The author describes this mystery of being united with Jesus Christ both spiritually and corporeally. Echartshausen states that the possession of knowledge of "God" is hidden from the worldly and only those in the "Community of Light", also known as the "Communion of Saints", may know "God". Eckhartshausen states that this "Inner Church" has existed since the Fall of man and contrasts this "Inner Church" to the "External Church" of symbols and rites. I believe that this book would have found more appeal to Christian and non Christian readers alike if the author presented this work as a corollary to the general view of "esoterism" which includes Eastern and Western Theory; however, this book provides some very intersting points which deserve attention.
