Finding Your Identity in Christ
Icebreaker Question
Where do people most commonly look for identity and worth today? Why do those things ultimately fail to satisfy?
Introduction
Our culture is obsessed with identity.
People search for meaning and worth through:
- success
- appearance
- relationships
- feelings
- sexuality
- accomplishments
- social approval
And yet many are left saying:
“I just don’t know who I am anymore.”
In John 8, Jesus confronts a group of religious leaders who also found their identity in the wrong place. They trusted in:
- heritage
- religion
- morality
- tradition
But Jesus exposes the emptiness of those foundations and reveals where true identity is found:
In Him.
This passage teaches us:
- the right place to find identity
- the right person to trust
- and the right pathway to follow
Read John 8:39–59
True identity and freedom are found only through faith in Jesus Christ—the eternal Son of God—and lived out through loving obedience to Him.
1. The Right Place: Faith (vv. 39–41)
The Pharisees believed their identity was secure because:
- they were descendants of Abraham
- religious
- moral
- outwardly devoted
But Jesus says:
“If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did.” (v. 39)
Abraham’s defining characteristic was not family heritage—it was faith.
Your identity is not ultimately found in:
- your background
- your family
- your accomplishments
- your morality
- your feelings
It is found through:
faith in Jesus Christ.Discussion Questions
- What are some common places people look for identity today?
- Why is heritage or morality alone not enough?
- What does it practically mean to place your identity in Christ?
- Why do false identities eventually collapse under pressure?
Augustine wrote:
“Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
What “broken cisterns” are you tempted to draw identity or satisfaction from instead of Christ?
2. The Right Person: Fully God (vv. 42–47; 56–58)
Jesus tells them:
“If God were your Father, you would love me.” (v. 42)
This is one of the clearest signs of genuine salvation:
a growing love for Jesus Christ.
Not merely:
- religious activity
- intellectual agreement
- church attendance
But genuine affection and submission to Him.
Jesus Reveals Who He Is
“Before Abraham was, I AM.” (v. 58)
Jesus claims:
- eternal existence
- equality with God
- divine authority
He is not merely a teacher.
He is:
the great I AM.
Your identity will only hold if it is anchored in the true Jesus:
- fully God
- fully Savior
- fully worthy of worship and obedience

- Why is loving Jesus different than merely believing God exists?
- What does Jesus mean when He says, “I AM”?
- Why is our view of Jesus so important to identity?
- What are some false ideas about Jesus people believe today?
Tim Keller said:
“If your god never disagrees with you, you may be worshipping an idealized version of yourself.”
Are there areas where you resist or redefine Jesus instead of submitting to Him?
3. The Right Pathway: Follow Him (vv. 44–47)
Jesus now shows that identity is revealed through direction and obedience.
The Pharisees rejected:
- truth
- God’s Word
- and ultimately Jesus Himself
Jesus makes it clear:
“Whoever is of God hears the words of God.” (v. 47)
To identify with Jesus means:
- hearing His Word
- loving His truth
- pursuing holiness
- and following Him daily
Faith is not passive agreement.
It is:
active surrender to Christ.Discussion Questions

- What are some false worldviews Christians are tempted to adopt today?
- How does following Jesus lead to real freedom?
Jesus does not merely improve your identity—
He gives you a completely new one IN CHRIST.
In Christ:
- you are forgiven
- adopted
- loved
- secure
- and free
Where are you finding your identity right now?
The only pathway to freedom is to have your identity IN CHRIST and more and more growing IN that reality.
“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
Prayer Focus
Spend time praying:
- thanking Jesus for your identity in Him
- confessing false places you seek worth or security
- asking God to deepen your love for Christ and His Word
