"This sanctification is throughout, in the whole man; yet imperfect in this life, there abiding still some remnants of corruption in every part; whence ariseth a continual and irreconcilable war, the flesh lusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh."
Why do Christians continue to struggle with sin after conversion? If we have been made new in Christ, why does the battle against temptation remain so intense?
In this episode, we examine WCF 13.2 and the biblical reality of the believer's ongoing struggle with indwelling sin. Drawing heavily from Romans 7:14–25, we explore how sanctification renews the whole person while remaining imperfect in this life. Though sin's dominion has been broken through union with Christ, remnants of corruption still abide within every believer, producing a continual conflict between the flesh and the Spirit.
This episode offers biblical encouragement for Christians who are discouraged by their remaining sin and reminds us that the very presence of this struggle is often evidence of God's sanctifying work within us.
The remaining effects and presence of sin that continue to exist in believers after conversion, though sin no longer reigns over them.
The ongoing presence of sinful desires and corruption within the believer that wars against the work of the Holy Spirit.
The lingering effects of sin upon the human mind, including weaknesses, errors, ignorance, and distorted thinking that remain until glorification.
The remaining corruption of the fallen nature that opposes God's will and resists the work of the Holy Spirit.
God's gracious work of renewing believers after the image of Christ and enabling them to die unto sin and live unto righteousness.
The ongoing putting to death of sinful desires and practices through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The final stage of salvation when believers are completely freed from sin and made perfect in holiness in the presence of Christ.
