Episode 93 - Cnoc Áine

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories.

This episode is the last in this month’s series of Goddess Stories. And it is a tough one.

Trigger warning, this story contains subject matter of a sexual nature and rape that some listeners may find distressing.

Cnoc Aine is all about the goddess that is based in Limerick. She was a goddess of light. A goddess of the sun, and the moon. She was known for her bright red hair, and ‘Aine’ means bright after all. Her feast day is the weekend after Lughnasadh, the harvest festival of the summer. You could pray to her for love, abundance, and vergence when mistreated.

Her story is one of resilience and strength, as much as it is about love and kindness. Although there are many fragments to her story, this is the one that made her famous in Munster. The mother of a line of Kings that sat on the throne of Cashel for over 2000 years. But it is a dark tale and one that requires some strength to listen to and comprehend.

This version is heavily based on the legendary story attributed to Cormac mac Culennain, king bishop of Cashel (d.908), published in the Leabhar Laignech c. 12th century AD explains this tale.
