On the morning of October 21st, 1966, in a Welsh village called Aberfan, a schoolteacher heard what sounded like thunder. She looked up and saw death cascading down the mountainside—half a million tons of coal waste, liquefied into a roaring avalanche. In the next four minutes, 116 children would die, buried alive under the accumulated refuse of the fuel that built their community.
This is the story of coal: the miracle fuel that lifted humanity from energy poverty and may yet unmake the modern world. From the Carboniferous swamps 300 million years ago, where dead trees accumulated because fungi had not yet evolved to break them down, to the Industrial Revolution that burned through millennia of stored sunlight in decades. The monks who first mined it. The queen who fled its smoke. The children who died extracting it.
