How do we know what is ethical responsibility to our clients, if we can't tell the difference between indexed and served?

If our understanding of the landscape of Google is solely dependent on Google announcements and documents all the while knowing how much they obfuscate what they do (that has a direct impact on us and our clients or projects), does that release us from the obligation to be strive for a professional distinction?

To know for ourselves regardless of what a google tool tells us?

Yeah, this is a rant episode. I am fully guilty of wanting all of us to be better - me included. And maybe wanting us all to be our best doesn't necessarily mean that we're all "THE" best. There are good doctors, there are mediocre doctors more than there are excellent doctors. Why should SEO as a field of endeavor not be subject to the same?
