Cold cathode compact fluorescent lamp - with schematic

Listen Later

I was quite surprised at the circuitry in this light. It's one I took apart a while ago, but hadn't reverse engineered yet. I had envisioned it as having the classic multi-section high voltage transformer often associated with these thin high voltage tubes that often operate at around 1000V.

The circuitry is unexpectedly simple. It doesn't have a smoothing capacitor and is simpler than the classic hot cathode type with two wires to each end of the tube.

I'll guess that the circuit maybe has a resonance factor between the inductor and output capacitors to generate a high enough voltage to strike the tube.

The 47nF capacitor is odd as the other capacitors in the output circuit seem to negate its purpose.

Let me know what you think of this circuit and how it operates.
