Colin O'Donnell: Significant improvements for endangered birds

Listen Later

The majority of our native bird species are doubling in numbers.
A 20-year study on pest control from the Department of Conservation has shown significant improvements in particular for the Mohua, or yellowhead, which used to be on the endangered list.
DOC Principal Science Advisor Colin O'Donnell told Mike Hosking about three-quarters of our native bird species are increasing in numbers.
He says the Mohua is a real success story.
"They've gone in our little study area from about 14 birds to over 330 birds in 20 years. And we can now go in there and harvest some of them to return to other forests as well."
