Since believers have been raised to new life with Christ, Paul urges them to set their sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. Their old life has died, and their real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is their life, is revealed, they also will share in his glory.
Because of this new life, Paul calls them to put to death the sinful things lurking within them—sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed. Once they walked in these ways, but now it is time to rid themselves of anger, rage, slander, and dirty language. Do not lie to one another, for they have stripped off the old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.
Instead, they are to put on a new nature and be renewed as they learn to know their Creator and become like him. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of them.
So Paul urges them to clothe themselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends you. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everyone together in perfect harmony. Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts, and always be thankful.
Let the message about Christ fill their lives as they teach and encourage one another with wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever they do or say, they are to do it as representatives of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Paul then brings these truths into everyday life—calling families and servants to live in love, obedience, wisdom, and sincerity. In everything, they are to work willingly as though serving the Lord himself, remembering that it is Christ they are truly serving.
