Welcome Home, Sam and Helen Rogers
A native of Miami, Florida, Sam grew up in South Georgia in
Nashville and Valdosta. He graduated from Valdosta High School in
1953. First UMC is Sam’s home church from which he launched into
the pastoral ministry. He attended Emory University where he was
granted Phi Beta Kappa in 1957.
While at Emory he met Helen Smith of Abbeville, Georgia,
and they were married in 1957. While she completed her college
education at Agnes Scott College (1959), he finished his work at
Candler School of Theology, graduating in 1960. Helen also
graduated from VHS in 1955 and was active at FUMC her senior
year. (She went to 13 different schools in her 12 years. Her father
built bridges all over Georgia!) They have three children and nine
grandchildren.
Ordained Deacon in 1958 and Elder in 1960 by the South
Georgia Annual Conference, he served 10 churches until retiring in
2000 after serving 42 years. His hobbies include singing, reading,
golf, sailing, travel and teaching DISCIPLE, CHRISTIAN
BELIEVER, and other studies.
It is with delight that we welcome Sam and Helen Rogers
back HOME and welcome Sam to our pulpit to proclaim the Good
News of Jesus Christ!
