Luke 9:23-27 - And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.  For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 

Luke 14:7-11 - For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Luke 14:25-33 - So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Luke 18:9-14 - But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' 

John 13:12-17 - When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you?  You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.

Are the commands of Jesus on humility optional for a Follower-of-Jesus?
