[00:02] There is no such thing as work life balance, everything worth fighting for unbalances your life. That's a quote from Alain de Botton. Welcome to the recharge podcast. I'm your host. My name is Mitchell schwind. The mission of this podcast is to provide you the tools, tactics, strategies, and resources to recharge your life. The episodes are geared to make an impact on your life in 15 minutes or less, along with more indepth special episodes interviewing experts across numerous disciplines. This show will guide you through getting the most from your body and mind to generate the maximum performance you want in your life. Let's jump into today's. So what I want to talk about today are five health myths that are killing you. They're literally killing you and you need to know these things. They're very simple and straightforward. First off is your cholesterol is low and so everything is fine. [00:48] Is that true? No, it's not. Well thinking was that if your total cholesterol, your ldl and your hdl, we're pretty good balance there. That your risk of cardiac disease like heart attack and stroke and those bad things was a lot lower than it was would be otherwise, while we now know that that is not good enough. In fact, it's actually the size of these different cholesterol particles that makes the biggest difference. This is critical and so the old typical method of just measuring the numbers and reporting that to you as the patient doesn't suffice. You need to know the size and so the the tests that you need to ask your doctor about or the vertical auto profile or the LPP. Those are the two common tests that are used, but just basically ask them to measure the size of your cluster all and this will give you a really good indication on the actual risk coming from your cholesterol for heart disease and stroke can have patients that have normal cholesterol, normal ldl, and still have an increased risk of heart disease. And so this is critical to your longevity. [01:46] So your blood sugar's 95, you're not diabetic, right? Well, diabetes is exploding, unfortunately in the near future. The vast majority of all of us in the United States are going to be diabetic if we don't do something about it. And so knowing which tests are needed to accurately diagnose diabetes or prediabetes is critical, uh, blood sugar or fasting blood sugar is okay, but it's not good enough if you certainly have risk for it or a family history or you're obese, you're gaining weight, uh, ask for some further looking, some checking test to consider would be not only the fasting blood sugar, but also a glucose challenge to see what actually happens to your blood sugar when you ingest a food source. And the other critical thing to measure is actual insulin. Many patients become resistant to the effects of insulin and that's all part of becoming diabetic and contributes to obesity and weight gain. And it's sort of a vicious circle. The, a one C, what you've probably heard of is just a good measure of what the blood sugar has been doing for last several months. So helpful. [02:47] But in the end, you need to dig deeper to get to the heart of the issue. So your fatigue, [02:53] your labs are normal. Well, it's all in your head, right? You may have heard this before and I'm sure you probably have friends or family that have gone through this scenario before where they're just exhausted all the time and basic tests. Thyroid blood count look normal, so they're told that they're fine and it's just a probably a psychologic issue or lack of sleep. The critical piece here is to understand that normal does not equate to optimal what is reported as normal for the vast majority may not be normal for you. It's the difference between living and optimized life versus just trying to fit into the normal standards. [03:31] Replacing hormones is dangerous. Unfortunately, there was a lot of misinformation and misrepresentation regarding some of the use of hormones, particularly in women and now with the a litigious society and the lawyers involved the testosterone issue in men. The reality is that unbalanced hormones are dangerous. We know from the data that hundreds of thousands of lives could have been saved in regards to women who were taken off estrogen supplementation. Realize that these studies that showed that hormones are dangerous. We're done with horse derived estrogen. The estrogen basically was produced from the urine of horses. The other issue is testosterone is preventative for heart disease and having low testosterone and ignoring. The issue is to miss out on an opportunity to improve health and longevity and prevent heart disease. Lastly, milk is good, right? It's good for your bones. I compete in a lot of endurance events and triathlons and to see it in all the journals, all the magazines. [04:30] There's a well known athletes drinking glass of chocolate milk. The idea is that your body needs calcium and yes, there's calcium in milk, but there are much better dietary sources. The other issue is that milk is packed full of hormones. Some studies show as many as 32 different hormones in milk. We are the only species. Keep us in mind. The only species on the planet that drinks the milk of another species. Milk causes allergies can cause leaky gut and inflammation and it actually depletes calcium. That may sound counter intuitive, but the issue is the dairy products, milk included, are acidic in. The body has to buffer that acid load and where does it draw the buffers from? The readily available source of calcium is bones, and so it actually leaches calcium from the bones, and so although you're taking milk to try and pump up your calcium to build strong bones, it actually has a opposite effect. Thank you so much for spending some time with me today. If you found value in this episode and the show, please share a review on itunes as it really helps the show get discovered.
