Common Pine Tree Pests and How to Stop Them

Listen Later

Pine tree pests can cause discolored needles, thinning foliage, dead branches, sticky sap, and rapid canopy browning. Common threats include bark beetles, pine tip moths, sawflies, webworms, and scale insects.

Inspect your trees regularly for warning signs such as pitch tubes, boring dust, visible larvae, white waxy coverings, or resin-covered branch tips. Healthy trees are better able to resist pests, so provide deep watering during dry periods, apply mulch around the root zone, and protect the trunk from damage.

Minor infestations may be managed with pruning, hand removal, insecticidal soap, or horticultural oil. Contact a certified arborist if browning spreads quickly, bark beetle activity is present, or the tree creates a safety risk.
