In the 2013 Census just over 2,000 i-Kiribati were living in New Zealand. Spread across Auckland, Waikato and Wellington, the i-Kiribati community is celebrating its language this week, fighting hard to preserve their mother tongue, but more importantly their cultural ways. Former Cabinet Minister and retired teacher from Kiribati, Baitika Toum Aviata has been in NZ for almost two years. He spoke to Breakfast about his i-Kiribati heritage.
