Theatre Diaspora began as a response to the lack of AAPI visibility on Portland stages and audiences as well as a lack of awareness and education regarding the importance of casting Asian American actors in Asian American roles and plays. MediaRites took on Theatre Diaspora as a project to create a yearly season of staged readings focusing on Asian/Pacific Islander American identity and cultural issues. In this episode of Building Our Own Tables: Season 2, host Yura Sapi discusses Theatre Diaspora with co-founders Samson Syharath and Dmae Lo Roberts.

This episode is inspired by recent and current events regarding Roe v. Wade and their potential impact on birthing people. We think about the representation of reproductive justice (things such as abortion, contraception, and anything regarding decisions to birth or plan a family) especially from Black women playwrights.
