It's always more convenient to make the Golden Rule fit us individually. Treat others the way they treat you. And if we get really spiritual, we may stick to what it actually says: "Treat others the way you would have them treat you." But what Jesus taught goes beyond that. Jesus says to treat others BETTER than we would want to be treated. Yes, even our enemies. But who are our enemies? And how is it possible to treat them better than we treat ourselves? After all, they don't deserve it. But neither do we.
