Competitive Eating...A Gastroenterologists' Nightmare!

Listen Later

Competitive Eating… Yes, it’s actually a sport! You may have even caught a glimpse of real human beings devouring countless hot dogs on ESPN at the Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest on Coney Island and thought “Those guys are nuts!”

People in these competitions compete against each other, eating large quantities of food, ingesting over 20,000 calories! There’s also a national organization that sponsors these ‘athletes!’ It’s a Gastroenterologists' nightmare!

Alex ‘Moose’ Perez is a competitive eater ranked 50th in the world. On this episode “Moose” talks about his journey into competitive eating that started in childhood when he ate everything in the house! He tells us how he trains for his events and explains his techniques and ‘strategy’ and how like a ‘scientist’ he figured out the most efficient and quickest way to debone a chicken wing! He’ll also share his tale of how he got so sick after eating several slices of ghost pepper pizza, he ended up coughing up blood! We also talk about the effects that competitive eating has on the body, specifically the brain and the gut.

Alex ‘Moose’ Perez was born in Chicago and later moved to Texas. He joined the Marine Corps after high school. Inspiration hit him hard as he saw Joey Chestnut vs. Kobiyashi (Competitive Eating World Champions) in 2006 compete against each other. His destiny took a turn after meeting Adam from the show ‘Man vs. Food,’ which launched him into signing up for his first food competition. 2 years into his career as an amateur eater, he branded himself as ‘Moose’ which was a name given to him at birth by the Nurses who take care of him as a baby in Chicago. After eating 112 Hooter chicken Wings, he was invited to join Major League Eating, a professional organization that sponsors eating contests.
