Another great entry in this series
Blacklin County Texas has its own group of people who opt out of society and live in a walled compound. This book looks at what happens when a child raised in this environment hits puberty and wants to meet a girl outside the group and to get more education than his home schooling provided. Although this scenario seems as if politics would be involved the motivation of the compound dwellers is left over Y2K end of the world worry. The scenes set at the local community college involving the faculty and staff are believable especially given the author's experience as a college professor and administrator.
The Sheriff's wife, Ivy, makes and appearance, as does the dispatcher, Hack. The book is a very enjoyable read with the style and humor one expects from this series. I was concerned by the title initially but it does not feature a Waco-type situation.
For my generation
These Dan Rhodes books are so much fun to read. I understand all the references and how his mind wanders and questions things. He is definitely a problem solver finding the most peaceful solution. I love Dr. Pepper with cane sugar, Zero candy bars, old westerns, and animals.
Can't Get Enough Of Dan Rhodes
I have read every book in this series and loved every book. I like the character and the little Texas town. Very believable books! Well written and fast paced and no real fancy csi work or detective's procedures.
Quirky, East Texas Fun
Sheriff Rhodes has the murder of a local professor to solve, but first he must deal with stolen hair extensions, feral pigs in the kitchen, and find a home for the late professor's cat. This is a mystery filled with charm, humor, and plenty of action.
Bill Crider's books just get better and better. My only regret with this one is that I finished it so fast and now have to wait for the next.
Wonderfully Original!
I just started reading these novels on a whim and I'm hooked! The main character is so down-to-earth one wishes he was everyone's Sheriff. The plots are wonderfully wandering- much like real life, I suppose. And the Sheriff is human! He isn't always perfect. Each book is different but the main characters- the jailer and his pal- remain their crotchety selves. These novels are a great read!
