In this chapter Packer affirms that Christians may solemnly swear oaths or make vows before God—but only when necessary, truthful, and within Scripture’s bounds. Christians are called to uphold both God’s word and their own spoken commitments to both God and to people in general; conversely, they are to scorn lies and deceit at all costs.
