Notes

Admitting my failures publicly – so you can avoid them personally.

Wisdom: Learn the hard way or Learn the easy way

Confession: Sometimes my struggle with doubt has left me lonely and isolated in unhealthy ways.

Myself: Can God really love someone as flawed as me?

Others: Flaws will have the final say, so be a fortress.
God: Legitimate pain warps my view

DOUBT IS NORMAL

Healthy skepticism is wise – Destructive doubt is unwise

Ourselves: Actors who play a part.

Others: Pawns we use selfishly.
God: dispenser we pacify or bribe.

Letting doubt drive our decisions leads to an unhealthy isolation we were never meant for.

Thomas said to them, “Unless I see the scars of the nails in his hands and put my finger on those scars and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” John 20:24-27

A week later the disciples were together again indoors, and Thomas was with them. The doors were locked, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” John 20:24-27

Then he said to Thomas, “Put you finger here, and look at my hands; then reach out your hand and put it in my side. Stop your doubting and believe!” John 20:24-28

God will meet us in our doubt, but rarely in our distance.

We are loved because of relationship, not because we get it right.

And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. Luke 15:20

Friendship can be a place where failure and flaws aren’t the final story.

And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.” Luke 22:32-34

Instead of explaining our pain, Jesus experienced our pain so He could fix what we could not.

Two others, both criminals, were led out to be executed with him. Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:32, 42, 43

Connection with God and others is the cure for the unavoidable doubt that tries to drive us into unhealthy isolation.
