This is a strange book to list in a search ...

This is a strange book to list in a search for Catholic audio books. A primary theme of this book could be described as (based on the publisher's description): "How Catholicism failed a person who once considered themselves Catholic". Can you imagine listing a hypothetical book called "How I Stopped Being Jewish" as a Jewish book, in a list of Jewish audiobooks? Or "The Confessions of an Atheist" in a list of books about God? It seems absurd. Odder yet are people who take a spiritual journey which includes a philosophy or historical religion and when they reach a place in their journey which satisfies them in some profound personal way, they dismiss the paths and teachings which got them to where they are, as irrelevant, backward or unworthy for others to consider .

A liberating read

Sheila Cassidy's book is a refreshing and inspirational read for lapsed Catholics, but is really for anyone who has struggled with doubt and dogma within a religious tradition. An ex-nun, a medical doctor and someone who endured imprisonment and torture in South America for treating an injured revolutionary, Sheila Cassidy speaks from experience, finding God not in rituals and sacraments, but in the world, nature and people. She can still enjoy some of the language of the Bible and Church, but is no longer limited or constrained by this. Her style is poetic and inviting -- a much needed encouragement to experiencing the Sacred everywhere. As the cover blurb says, "Her vision will touch many troubled Catholics for whom the Church has come to seem too small and pinched a space for the God they still believe in as much as ever.
