Growth Instigators Hotline

Confidence Without Defensiveness

Listen Later

Confidence is supposed to set you free, so why does it sometimes feel like the better you get, the harder it is to learn? We pull apart a sneaky leadership trap: the same confidence that helps you start a new job, take a risk, or step into responsibility can quietly turn into a shield you can’t put down.

We talk about what happens when you stop being the beginner and become the person who’s “supposed to know.” That identity can make admitting uncertainty feel dangerous, so we cover, overwork, and explain our way out of the very feedback that could make us better. Instead of hearing input as information, we treat it like an attack. And then we double down on effort, telling ourselves that if we just push longer and care more, it will all sort itself out.

Here’s the shift we’re aiming for: not less confidence, but less defensiveness. We explore how effort can create a blind spot when it’s used to avoid the truth, why pride rarely feels like arrogance from the inside, and how staying curious changes everything. You’ll walk away with a clear question to ask yourself, plus a practical way to start receiving hard feedback without needing to “win” the conversation.

If you want someone in your corner who tells you the truth kindly, we share how one-on-one growth coaching can help. Subscribe for more, share this with a high performer who needs it, and leave a review with the truth you’re ready to face.
