Congress Advises MLB Regarding Television Broadcasts (1958)

Today is January 13, 2017. Travel back with me to this day in 1958. Today we’re going back to a couple simultaneous turning points for professional baseball; the emergence of national television broadcasts, which opened new doors and revenue streams for Major League teams, and what many at the time believed to be the death knell for the minor league system. We’ll join the minor league owners and a congressman fighting on their behalf to curtail the power of MLB’s unwritten anti-trust exemption, and, spoiler alert: we’ll lose.
