CONNECTIONS: Supporting support workers: breaking down barriers for undervalued health care workers

Listen Later

The last time you visited a hospital or primary care setting, it’s likely that you interacted with a health care support worker. Whether they are processing lab samples at the local GP surgery or promoting health education in local communities, 40 per cent of the NHS’ clinical workforce consists of a variety of support workers. Richard Griffin, Professor of Healthcare Management, and Anita Esser, Head of Education at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, discuss how the NHS can recruit, recognise and develop the confidence and skills of a vital but often overlooked part of the health care workforce.
