On this episode I catch up with the extraordinary yet humble Tony Lymon. He is a polyglot of talents and interests who grew up in one of the poorest areas in the USA. I was so fortunate to know Tony and become his friend during college. I was a huge fan during his Jam-Rock phase with King Konga. This is a long one but there are so many gems to learn from Tony. We talk about race and classism. We also go in deep on high school band and its critical role in education. Tony's non traditional path to completing his education is also enlightening.  To reward those who listen to the entire podcast Tony gave me permission to add a track from King Konga's album Something Good!

Tony Lyom is the former Assistant Director of Bands at Petal High School in Petal, Mississippi and currently is the co-music arranger/show designer for the Petal High School marching band. Tony is the director show designer for the Petal Indoor Percussion Theatre, a national WGI Percussion Scholastic World Finalist. He has twice been awarded the Outstanding Junior High Director of the Southeast Mississippi Band Directors Association and the 2008 Mississippi Bandmasters Association AE McClain Outstanding Young Band Director Award. Tony was also the Founder and Director of Eminence Indoor Percussion Ensemble, a regional and national WGI Open Class finalist and championship ensemble.

Tony recently wrapped up a season as the sound designer for The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps in 2018 and currently serves as Creative Designer for Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps. He is the owner of Eidetic Creative, a multimedia creative designs solution business. He currently resides  in Petal, Mississippi with his wife Emily and 13 year-old daughter Colette.

On this episode, I am excited to introduce you to Lekeshia Jarrett, M.D. She  is an amazing person and we focus on her background and evolution as both a mother and family medicine physician.

She is the cornerstone of a power couple with her husband Christopher Jarrett. Chris has a cameo but really deserves an episode of his own.

Dr. Lekeshia Jarrett received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Xavier University of Louisiana. She earned her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and she completed her internship and residency in Family Practice and Community Medicine at the University of South Alabama. She is board certified in family medicine.

Dr. Christopher Jarrett received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Internship and Residency at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Ranawat Orthopaedic Center, Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. Dr. Jarrett is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with a specialty focus in Hips and Knees as well as General Orthopaedic Conditions.

We overcame zoom and internet gremlins to produce a conversation on how she uses a combination of humor, friendship, medical advice and compassion to overcome injury, aging and now the pandemic.  I really appreciate Nikki taking the time to join the podcast. Susan Clinard is an award-winning artist who exhibits extensively.  She is an artist in residence at the Eli Whitney Museum. Susan has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts. She has received substantial public commissions, and her sculptures can be found in many private collections worldwide. She has been the awardee of the 2019 MH Hammerschlag Award, and the 2018 Art by the Northeast Award for Sculpture.

Dr. Raymond Young is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University. He is the Division Chief of Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Services for Emory Healthcare.  In his role Dr. Young is responsible for development and expansion of psychiatric consultation liaison services for Emory Healthcare. 

Along with his position as Division Chief of Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Services for Emory Healthcare, Dr. Young is the Program Director for Emory Healthcare’s Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship Program.  His clinical interests include telemedicine, geriatrics, organ transplantation, and functional neurological disorders. Dr. Young is a Fellow of Emory’s Woodruff Leadership Academy and a Fellow of the Academy of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry.

Dr. Young joined Emory’s Department of Psychiatry in August of 2003. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio in 1998 and completed a combined Internal Medicine-Psychiatry Residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luks Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He is board certified in Psychiatry with added qualifications in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry.

Jane P. Gagliardi, MD, MHS, FACP, DFAPA completed medical school, residency training in combined internal medicine-psychiatry, and her masters of health science in the clinical research training program at Duke, where she has remained on faculty since completing residency training. Dr. Gagliardi has been involved in the educational programs in the Department of Medicine, where she served as Clerkship Director and Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for nearly a decade through June, 2014 and in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, where she served as the Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Training Program from 2011 till 2013, Director of the Psychiatry Residency Training Program from 2013 through 2019, and Director of the Medicine-Psychiatry Residency Training Program starting in 2019. She has been the Vice Chair for Education since 2014. She is a small group leader in the medical school Clinical Skills course and founded and co-directs the medical school Evidence-Based Medicine course. Dr. Gagliardi is particularly interested in the interplay between patient safety measures, various pressures in medicine including implementation of the electronic health record, and medical education, and she has worked to develop and encourage projects in patient safety and quality improvement. She does inpatient clinical work in both departments, spending time on the General Medicine, inpatient Psychiatry, combined Medicine-Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Emergency Psychiatry services.

I really appreciate KNCI 105.1 allowing me to replay on my platform the interview I gave them in May.  I covered a lot of ground during the interview discussing mental health, the pandemic and treatment.
