Consistency for Busy People: How to Get Results Without Doing More

Listen Later

You must have heard the famous slogan that the key to results is consistency. But have you ever thought about how hard consistency actually is? Life gets busy, work piles up, and you’re exhausted; so the gym becomes the first thing you drop. Grabbing snacks feels easier than making a healthy meal. And when you can’t find a full hour for the gym, you decide there’s no point going at all.

On overloaded days when you only have 30 minutes, you tell yourself it won’t be enough for a “real” workout; so why bother? Instead, you sit and wait for the perfect window: a full hour, the right energy, the right mood. The truth is, that moment rarely arrives.

And you are not the problem. You’re not the only one struggling with consistency because of a busy schedule. The good news is that a simple mindset shift can change everything. With just 20 minutes, you can still move your body or prep something healthy to make tomorrow easier.

To help you stay consistent in the middle of a busy schedule, I’ve gathered practical tips you can start using right away, so you can build healthier habits without waiting for “perfect.” Have a look!

  • Lower the Bar
  • By lowering the bar, we are not lowering the standard. We are maximizing the goal of consistency, which revolves around reducing tasks to the smallest possible action. For instance, doing 5 minutes of exercise, or writing one paragraph instead of a blog post daily.

    • Use Triggers, Not Willpower
    • Don’t wait for motivation. When building your new habit, attach it to an activity you perform regularly. For example, meditating for 1 minute immediately after brewing morning coffee or right before bed, journal for 5 minutes. Such routines become easier to perform because they require less mental effort.

      • The 2-Day Rule
      • The 2-Day rule is based on the argument that it is okay to miss a day, but never miss two days in a row to prevent habits from breaking. If you miss exercise today, make it a priority tomorrow to avoid breaking the habit.

        • Visual Tracking
        • The strategy involves using a calendar or checklist to track progress, which provides dopamine boosts and encourages continued effort. This is because the feeling of checking a box triggers a small dose of dopamine, which provides the motivation to stay on track.

          • Focus on Process, Not Outcome
          • Prioritize showing up over intensity. A 50% effort on a busy, tiresome day is still 100% of your capacity that day.

Staying consistent, doing less, more often, is the fastest path to better health for busy people. Commit to the process you have identified for achieving better health, no matter how you’re feeling on any given day.
